Ashley Campbell – Live at Kenwood House London

“Yes, I’ve brought a banjo to the UK” said Ashley Campbell with a broad smile on her face, walking on stage at London’s Kenwood House. Campbell delivered a great set as support to Kris Kristofferson with her energy, infectious enthusiasm and songs bringing the audience to life. Playing a set largely taken from her debut album The Lonely One, Campbell showed her wicked sense of humour by kicking off with the fun track Better Boyfriend which brought laughter and smiles from the audience. The instrumental Carl and Ashley’s Breakdown showed off her considerable banjo skills to great effect. She seems happiest on this instrument but is more than capable on the guitar. … Continue reading Ashley Campbell – Live at Kenwood House London

Kashena Sampson – Live in London – Review ****

Having impressed at the CMAAmericana Showcase earlier in the year Kashena Sampson was back for a handful of UK dates and this show at London’s Slaughtered Lamb was her debut London headline gig. Opening was troubadour James Riley, proud Londoner and ex-Nashville resident who played an energetic and quality set, including his forthcoming single Lightning Strikes. Sampson bounced onto the stage with infectious enthusiasm and thanked the audience for coming to her “first headline show in London”. Her warmth and personality shone through and she captivated throughout her 11-song set. Playing every track from her wonderful debut album Wild Heart it’s clear the album is well named. She has a well … Continue reading Kashena Sampson – Live in London – Review ****

Anderson East – On Fire in London *****

Nashville resident Anderson East and his storming six-piece band from Alabama hit London’s Jazz Café. They hit it so hard the cleaners will still be mopping the sweat off the floor. This was a performance of staggering and swaggering intensity. East struts the stage with as much command as Mick Jagger, whom this reviewer had seen the previous evening. After the show East commented to BOON “if I can still do this at Jagger’s age I’ll be pleased” with his typical droll delivery. The venue was sweltering, it seems that when they remodelled the venue a couple of years ago they forgot to put back the … Continue reading Anderson East – On Fire in London *****

Rita Coolidge — Live in London ****

BOON was lucky to catch the Delta Lady herself Rita Coolidge in the middle of her residency at the Boisdale food/music venue at London’s Canary Wharf. Backed by her excellent West Coast outfit of guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, Coolidge glided effortlessly through a 75-minute 16-track set of pure class. In the UK to promote her new album, she is back to her Americana roots with Safe In The Arms Of Time. Opening with the Kris Kristofferson cover Late Again (Gettin’ Over You) you sensed you were in the presence of greatness. No frills, superb vocals delivered in a relaxed style gained from decades at the top of her trade. … Continue reading Rita Coolidge — Live in London ****

Hungrytown – Live – Farncombe, Surrey

Hungrytown are Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, a husband and wife duo from Vermont. The pair played a delightful unplugged set at Hector’s boathouse bistro in Farncombe. Originally the duo lived in New York but gave up the city life to move to a quiet part of Vermont “a small state with big snow” to pursue their musical dreams. They play up to 150 shows per year. When they tour America they have their trusty camper van with them with almost 300,000 miles on the clock, in England they have the “luxury” of small hotels and a hire car. Playing a set with no amplification and mainly … Continue reading Hungrytown – Live – Farncombe, Surrey
